BIM management and coordination

BIM management and coordination

That all models speak the same language

When three or four different disciplines work on a project, it is normal that the models do not fit.
We manage this coordination so that problems are detected in the model, not on site.

What is BIM coordination and what problems does it solve in multidisciplinary projects

BIM coordination is the process of federating models from all disciplines of a project —architecture, structure, MEP facilities, industrial facilities— in a common data environment and managing the flow of information review and approval throughout the entire project cycle.

Without BIM coordination, each discipline works with its own version of plans and models. Collisions between systems appear when they are already executed. Information travels by mail without version control. The result is additional costs, delays and on-site conflicts that could have been avoided in the model.

ISO 19650 is the international standard that regulates the management of BIM information. More and more tenders and private clients require it as a contracting requirement.

New construction projects Complex reforms Private promoters Public tenders

BIM will be mandatory in public building contracts in Spain from 2026. This is the time for your team to learn it ahead of time.

Do any of these situations sound familiar to you?

Models from different disciplines have collisions that no one detected until they arrived on site.

Each subcontractor works with outdated information because there is no single documentation site.

The project does not have BEP and no one knows who does what or in what format.

BIM coordination with ISO 19650: what it means in practice

ISO 19650 is the international standard that defines how to manage information in BIM projects. Establishes who produces what, in what format, with what file name and through what data environment.

BIM coordination with ISO 19650: what it means in practice

In practice, that means having a clear BEP from the start, a CDE where all version-controlled documentation lives, and a review and approval flow that prevents anyone from working on outdated information.

We take care of configuring everything, from drafting the BEP to managing the CDE throughout the design and execution phase. The platforms we use are the ones your team already knows: Autodesk Construction Cloud, BIM 360, Revizto or others.

The CDE (Common Data Environment) is the centralized digital environment where all project documentation lives: models, plans, specifications, communications and approvals. A single site, with version control and a clear review and approval flow for all parties.

Without a CDE, each discipline works with its own version of the plans. That’s when collisions appear that no one detected, changes that someone didn’t communicate, and discrepancies between what was designed and what was executed.

With those already used by the team or those that best fit the project. Autodesk Construction Cloud, BIM 360, Revizto and Trimble Connect are the most common. The choice depends on the type of project, number of disciplines and client requirements.

If you do not have a preference, we recommend the one that best suits your case. If the client or the administration imposes a specific platform, we work with it.

The BEP (BIM Execution Plan) is the document that establishes the rules of the BIM project: who produces what, in what format, with what file nomenclature and through what approval flow. Without BEP, BIM coordination does not work well no matter how good the software is.

We draft the BEP at the beginning of the project, we agree on it with all parties and we keep it updated during execution. It is the first deliverable of any BIM coordination project we do.

Yes, and in renovation projects it is usually more necessary than in new construction. There are starting models that may not be up to date, disciplines that work in adjacent areas, and the added complexity of interference with existing activity.

In these cases the first step is usually a laser scan of the current state to have a reliable as-built base. From there, coordination works the same as in any other BIM project.

Do you have a project with several models and without coordination?

Tell us how many disciplines there are and what phase it is in. We suggest how to order it.
