The callenge
Salobreña Castle is one of the most iconic landmarks on the Costa Tropical and a remarkable example of Nasrid heritage in the province of Granada. The objective of the project was to produce accurate digital documentation of both the fortified enclosure and the Arab baths preserved within the castle, creating a reliable technical foundation for future conservation and restoration works.
In addition to accurately recording the geometry of the entire complex, the project aimed to develop a digital resource that would enhance public engagement while allowing specialists to assess the monument’s condition without the need for additional surveying campaigns.
The process
To document the monument, a reality capture workflow was developed by combining high-resolution 3D laser scanning with immersive photography, producing a complete digital representation of the castle
Survey Planning
A preliminary assessment of the monument was carried out to define the scanning positions and ensure complete coverage of the walls, towers, courtyards and Arab baths.
3D Laser Scanning
The survey was performed using a colour 3D laser scanner, completing approximately 80 scan positions throughout the entire complex. This methodology produced a high-density point cloud that accurately reproduces the geometry of both the castle and its historic Arab baths.
Point Cloud Processing
The captured data was registered and processed to generate a continuous point cloud, providing a reliable basis for analysis, documentation and future conservation works.
Digital Model Development
Using the point cloud as a reference, a detailed 3D model was created, allowing accurate visualisation of both the castle's exterior and the interior spaces of the Arab baths.
Heritage Promotion
As the final stage of the project, an interactive virtual tour was developed, enabling visitors to explore areas that are normally inaccessible while promoting the monument through an innovative digital experience.
The results
The project resulted in a complete digital representation of Salobreña Castle and its Arab baths, providing highly accurate documentation that serves as a valuable technical resource for future conservation and restoration projects.
Thanks to 3D laser scanning technology, one of Granada’s most significant historic landmarks has been digitally preserved. The resulting point cloud, 3D model and virtual tour support technical teams in their conservation work while also improving public access to the monument through immersive digital experiences. This documentation provides a permanent digital record of the site, facilitating future inspections, intervention planning and the long-term preservation of this important cultural heritage asset.
