The challenge
Carcabuey Castle and the Hermitage of Our Lady of the Castle form one of the most representative historic landmarks in the Subbética region of Córdoba. The objective of the project was to produce accurate digital documentation of both the fortified enclosure and the hermitage, creating a reliable technical foundation for future conservation and restoration works.
Beyond accurately recording the geometry of the monument, the project also aimed to improve public access through digital technologies, allowing a wider audience to experience this historic site without affecting the integrity of the monument.
The process
A reality capture workflow was developed to document the monument, combining high-precision geometric data with immersive visual content to create a complete digital representation of the site.
Survey Planning
A preliminary site assessment was carried out to define the scanning positions and ensure complete coverage of the castle, the hermitage and their surrounding areas.
3D Laser Scanning
The survey was performed using a colour 3D laser scanner, accurately capturing both the interior and exterior of the fortified enclosure. This process generated a high-density point cloud that faithfully reproduces the geometry of the entire historic complex.
360° Photography
Alongside the laser scanning survey, a complete 360° photographic campaign was carried out to visually document every area of the castle and the hermitage, enriching the digital information collected during the survey.
Data Processing
The captured data was registered and processed to produce a structured, high-precision point cloud ready for future applications in conservation, analysis and technical documentation.
Virtual Tour Development
Finally, all visual information was integrated into an interactive virtual tour, providing an innovative digital experience that enhances public access and promotes the cultural value of the monument.
The results
The project delivered a complete digital representation of Carcabuey Castle and the Hermitage of Our Lady of the Castle, providing a highly accurate technical resource for future conservation and restoration projects.
The combination of 3D laser scanning, point cloud technology and 360° photography has ensured the long-term digital preservation of this historic complex while supporting both technical professionals and public engagement through an accessible virtual tour. Thanks to this documentation, the client now has reliable information for the management and conservation of the monument, as well as an innovative communication tool that helps promote one of the most iconic heritage sites in the Subbética region of Córdoba.
